Top 7 websites to teach yourself SEO
So, here are some words and links from Matthew...
"When I first got into online marketing many moons ago, my main focus was on paid search (Google AdWords et al) and my job revolved around creating campaigns, bids, clicks, conversions etc however, although it wasn’t part of my job at that time, I found SEO equally as interesting and wanted to learn more. Without any on the job experiences to learn from I went looking online for websites that would help me, and they did. Since then SEO has become part of my job in a couple of positions and I can honestly say the following websites were a big reason why I knew enough about the subject to be able to work in that field.
Whether you are a complete beginner or you an SEO master, these sites have enough of a back catalogue and regular new information to keep you going for months!
1. http://www.seomoz.org/blog: Starting as an SEO agency they have used their blog to position themselves as a global resource for the industry
2. http://www.seobook.com/blog: A mix of practical advice, industry news and personal opinion
3. http://searchengineland.com/columns/: one of my favourite sites, the columns section covers all aspects of search marketing
4. http://searchenginewatch.com/sew_archive_experts&type=sew_experts/sem-101&issue=2009: Really good introductory articles to various aspects of online marketing
5. http://www.wolf-howl.com: This site has been around for years and it mixes advice with commentary and personal opinion
6. http://econsultancy.com/blog: The volume of posts each day can be a bit too much and some articles don’t go in to a lot of detail, but the percentage that do hit the money make it worth it.
7. http://www.toprankblog.com/: Good traditional ‘how to’ blog with some great advice for all levels of knowledge
These are the sites that I relied on to get me up to speed early on and the ones I still read each week, and I’m sure many have your own, so if you’d like to share them leave a comment and link below…

Charities 'should get angry a bit more,' says Tony Elischer - Communications - Third Sector
They should even consider bad language, says head of Think Consulting Solutions
Charities should consider being more angry and more outspoken in their communications, delegates at the International Fundraising Congress in the Netherlands have been told.
In a talk about the future of the sector, Tony Elischer, director of Think Consulting Solutions, said charities needed to be more closely engaged with the way people communicate in the real world.
"Real people are gritty, direct, outspoken and rebellious," he said. "It wouldn't be a bad thing for us to get angry a bit more."
He said the Bollocks To Poverty campaign by development charity ActionAid was an example of bad language being used effectively by a charity.

My Pantone on iPhone
Pantone swatches and more to carry everywhere on your phone. OK so the accuracy is not going to be fantastic as it can only be as good as the screen its on, but lets face it we have to deal with that everyday on our Mac no matter how much we calibrate it and always have to turn to an actual printed swatch for final appraisal or confirmation of exact colour.
But, that said this has to be the best tool a designer can have in their pocket at all times for only a fiver ish.
Get along to your iTunes store now and get it bought, not that many shortcomings for the price.

Blogger app for iPhone
This must be a great little app for people who blog for the most part their own thoughts and reviews. For me it's use may well be limited as I mostly post links I find of interest and use to creatives, but who knows maybe this could be the start of me posting my own ocasional thoughts and ideas while I'm waiting for a haircut. No doubt it's a very cool app.

JoomlaWorks SuperBlogger:
blogging for Joomla! 1.5 just got easier
SuperBlogger is a new powerful plugin adding blogging functionality to Joomla! 1.5 articles. The plugin integrates popular services like Disqus.com (for comments) and Twitter, along with commonly used blogging tools like tagging, rating, bookmarking and social media sharing. Add to that MVC template overrides and the ability to process images server-side and you got a real Wordpress contender, if not better in some areas!
SuperBlogger's features can easily be set in the plugin's parameters, so you can choose which elements you want to make use of in your Joomla! website.
FEATURES
- Joomla! with SuperBlogger on!: This screenshot showcases the plugin with all options enabled. Using Disqus comments, Twitter tools and the built-in ajax-rating system among others!
Download this image
" target="_blank">
Joomla! with SuperBlogger on! Joomla! with SuperBlogger on!
Common features include:
- Integration with the popular Disqus.com comment system (includes video commenting via Seismic).
- Tools for Twitter like 'Tweet this' button, Tweetmeme badge for tracking tweetbacks/retweets, latest Tweets feed from your Twitter account.
- Article rating system using ajax (built-in) or the online service Outbrain.com (for added features).
- Article tags (using the meta keywords field inside the Joomla! article form).
- Article tools like section/category links with associated RSS feed links, stats, date created, font resizer, 'bookmark this' button, social media sharing and option for integrating a social button from services like AddThis or ShareThis.
- Related content across the web provided by Sphere.com (as used in sites like CNN.com).
- Drop-cap feature and introtext emphasizing for cool magazine style typography. The styling can easily be altered on the article page template of the plugin.
- Author tools like author avatar (via Gravatar.com) and latest articles from author.
- Image resizing and resampling (server-side) for the first image in your articles. On listing pages (e.g. blogcategory) the image is wrapped with a link to the rest of the article and on article pages the image is wrapped with a link to lightbox popup for displaying the original image which was processed by the plugin. Your website will now have a consistent look, perform better (due to optimal image sizing) and your content editors will not have to worry anymore about resizing images in desktop applications!
- Predefined anchor links with smooth scrolling effects make navigating among the features of the plugin a breeze.
- Option to insert custom HTML at the footer of the article. Useful for adding copyright statements or other generic messages for your articles.
- MVC template overrrides architecture: It uses 2 templates for listing and article pages, with associated CSS files. That means styling flexibility
- You can select to render the plugin on specific (or all) categories and/or menus. So if your site has a "blog" category, you can instruct the plugin to render only there and not in the entire site. The selection is done easily is the plugin parameters.
- It can load any module position in 3 different places: after the article text, before and after the comments. These options are fully configurable in the plugin parameters. Using MVC template overrides or simply tweaking the plugin templates, you can move these positions elsewhere or even add more (e.g. some position with Google Ads, another with "related articles" etc.). For more, this is fully explained in the documentation page of the plugin.
MVC TEMPLATE OVERRIDES
The feature trully setting apart SuperBlogger from any other Joomla! plugin is its MVC architecture, currently available in Joomla! for components and modules only. That means you can use HTML and CSS template overrides inside your Joomla! template and completely change the way the plugin elements display on your website! So you can either choose to use the versatile base styling of the plugin or simply override it (both the HTML and CSS code) by copying the plugin's /tmpl folder within your Joomla! template's /html folder. SuperBlogger uses 2 templates for listing and article pages, with 4 associated CSS files (one common, one for Disqus comments, one for IE6 and one for IE7 - just in case). Of course you are able to override all files or selected files, as you would with any other MVC component or module, with the better exception that SuperBlogger overrides CSS files as well!PERFORMANCE
SuperBlogger improves performance of existing Joomla! websites by resizing and caching the first article image. The cached copies reside in Joomla!'s /cache folder so they are refreshed whenever Joomla!'s cache refresh time is reached. If Joomla!'s cache is not enabled in your website, the plugin uses its own cache expiration time (set in the plugin parameters) and it will refresh your images. Whether Joomla!'s cache is on or off, you can always go to the "cache manager" in the administration and select to manually delete cached copies, whenever you want to "hard-refresh" the resized images. One more great feature of the image processing mechanism in SuperBlogger is its ability to grab remote images (located in some remote server) and store them locally for even better performance. So if your first article image is located in some other server, SuperBlogger will fetch it, resize it and store the resized copy locally onto your server for better performance.
Caching is also used for your Twitter "status" (the 'Latest Tweets from' feature) thus speeding up the article page significantly.

Yep passive income I think we would all like more of that, more time available for coffee and cake - perfect. I have already looked at and even started a few of these ideas, the trouble is you get to busy scraping a living and hitting deadlines I never find the time to follow it all through.
That said I'm pleased I found this reminder as well as some new ideas and plan to set aside regular time to invest in the concept and implementation of "passive income" lets face it the bleedin pension won't ever amount to much I have to find some sort of supplements for now and latter life.

[re]design

[re]design
It's time to [re]design design... What is design for? It is widely accepted that we have no more than 10 years to turn around our unsustainable ways of living. In this state of emergency, what role can design play in creating positive solutions and true quality of life?
Climate change presents designers with a massive responsibility – and opportunity. As creative thinkers and doers, designers are uniquely placed to review, rethink and remake the products, services and systems that shape our future.
[re]design is a social enterprise that propagates sustainable actions through design. We seek out and promote products and projects that are friendly to people and planet, and partner with a wide range of organisations to pioneer sustainable innovation.
[re]design events and exhibitions examine the ecological imperatives, social and political drivers, and creative strategies that shape sustainable design. We aim to engage diverse audiences – public, education and business – in the [re]design of design.

Another Rocket themes result - but have I sold out

HandiSeat OMG whatever will I have to do next!
Ever felt like you sold out!
I'm sure you do - lets face it most of us are frustrated artists and we turn to photography or design to make money instead of art.
Well I have been lucky so far...
at least throughout most of my career I have sold out to benefit many worthy causes in the Charity Sector and while making little or no money (in fact often loosing or giving away both money and time) I have always had great job satisfaction, knowing that what I do not only made a difference but counted for something I cared about.
Not any more I don't...
Here I am giving you another excellent example of how much use Rocket Themes templates are and how easy they are to customise BUT its not an example I take any pride in I mean disposable toilet seat covers and to think I passed up a project that would help and save countless Orangutans for this!
Still it looks good!...
client loves it and even I have to eat and sleep and buy stuff eventually - lets hope I can make a few quid quickly and get back building on my past philanthropic efforts soon.
I mean WHO THE HELL WILL BUY THESE?...
That's what I said about bottled water - from time to time I forget that when we do our job well - people will buy almost anything.

Joomla Templates and phpBB3 Styles - RocketTheme

Joomla Templates and phpBB3 Styles - RocketTheme
Do you get a few clients that think you can knock out a website for them in a day and as cheap as anything - don't we all, they all think you press one button and then your done.
Well if you can't convince them to develop a sensible budget for their website and you are happy to use Joomla, instead of sending them away you should check out this great set of Joomla templates from Rocket Themes.
The templates look fantastic and have so many modules and colour variations available, they can be quickly customised to your design requirements (just not quite bespoke). membership is cheap and helpful as are the forums.
I have used these to great effect in the charity sector and for clients with a smaller budget.

I'll start my brand new blog with the obvious saying as its only a matter of time before it gets lost in the depths of the long list that is a blog.
Joomla great open source CMS website - use it with Heart internet hosting - they even have a quick install button, one click and you built a website ready for content and some design elements.
Joomla use it all the time and don't forget to send them the odd fiver or so as a thanks and for continued development of this great product.
